A practical guide for small businesses: what AI assistants look for, the five things that make the biggest difference, and how to check whether it is working.

Key takeaways
AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews mention businesses they can understand and that other trusted sites talk about. Google says there is no special trick for its AI features: the same SEO basics apply. The biggest lever most small businesses miss is being mentioned on third-party sites, not just their own.
How do AI assistants decide which businesses to mention?
When someone asks an assistant “which agency can help with my Facebook ads?”, it pulls together information from web pages it can find and trust, then writes an answer. Google states that to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page simply needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal search. There is no separate AI markup or special file required.
That means good small business SEO is still the foundation. What changes is how much weight third-party mentions carry. An industry analysis reported by Search Engine Land found brands were 6.5 times more likely to be mentioned by AI when they appeared on other websites, and only 13% of AI mentions came from a brand’s own domain.
1. Make your website easy for AI to understand
AI tools read your pages the way a careful new customer would. If they cannot tell what you do, who you serve and where, they will not recommend you.
- One clear heading per page that says what the page is about.
- A plain-English answer to “what is this service?” near the top of each service page.
- Your services, location or service area and contact details written as text, not only inside images.
- Structured data (schema) that matches what is visible on the page.
A fast, well-structured site helps here, which is why we build every SEO website design project with this in mind.
2. Answer the questions your customers actually ask
Assistants are answering questions, so pages that answer questions clearly are easier to quote. Start each answer with the direct response in one or two sentences, then add detail.
- Collect the questions you hear on sales calls and WhatsApp.
- Turn each one into a heading, with a 40–60 word answer underneath.
- Include the cost question; buyers ask it constantly, and vague pages get skipped.
- Keep pages up to date and show a “last updated” date.
This is the core of good SEO content marketing: useful answers first, promotion second.
3. Get mentioned on other trusted sites
Because most AI mentions come from third-party pages, your reputation elsewhere matters as much as your own website. In the same industry analysis, Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn were among the most-cited sources, and “best of” list articles appeared in many commercial answers.
- List your business on relevant directories and review sites, and ask happy clients for honest reviews.
- Share genuinely useful answers in communities where your customers ask for help.
- Publish original insights, such as a small survey or data study, that others want to reference.
- Contribute expert quotes or guest articles to respected publications in your field.
4. Keep your business details consistent everywhere
Use the same business name, one-line description, website address and contact details on your site, social profiles and directory listings. Consistency makes it easier for search engines and AI tools to recognise that every mention is about the same business.
5. Make sure Bing can find you, not just Google
Microsoft Copilot answers are grounded in Bing search, and other assistants also rely on web search indexes. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting your sitemap takes a few minutes and widens the net.
How to check whether AI tools mention your business
Write down 10–20 questions a buyer might ask, such as “best local SEO company for a plumber”. Once a month, ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and note whether you are named or linked. In Google Analytics 4, watch for referral visits from sources like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.
No one can guarantee an AI mention, but tracking it monthly shows whether your digital marketing strategy is moving in the right direction.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for AI search?
No. Google says no special markup or AI text files are needed for its AI features. Standard structured data that matches your visible content is still worth having, and an llms.txt file is an optional extra.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
It varies. Your pages need to be indexed first, and third-party mentions build up over months. Treat it as part of ongoing SEO rather than a one-off task.
